As soon as Lou placed the last book, the far wall slid to one side. I had no idea what "Pamela's" meant, but it was the word that worked. Or was it Pamela with a last name that begins with S? Either we were to find something that belonged to someone named Pamela or find someone named Pamela Smith or some other name that starts with an S. I didn't know who Pamela is or was, and I didn't know what thing of hers the clue had to do with. I didn't care. But no one I had met told me her name is Pamela. Had someone lied to me about their name? If so, I figured the gun-toting guy in the house next door was named Pamela. That's the reason he was so grumpy. Even more so than a boy named Sue.
From where I sat behind the desk, I couldn't see where we would be headed next. I just knew that we were out of the library, and I hoped we wouldn't have to go to the Billiard Room or the Conservatory on the way to solve our mystery.
Once we hopped up, we went through the wall and down a short hallway, then, we turned to my right, stepped on a certain place on the floor, and another wall parted. Immediately, I learned a few things. In a way, I was elated. In a way, I figured I had failed.
We were back in the room where all of this started. The lights were on and I could see what the room looked like and that the cops Lou and I left behind did a good job of detaining our suspects. I also learned that sometimes the dead return. There, seated in a chair looking very much alive was the guy I saw on the floor in the mirror maze. Lazarus wasn't the only one who could come back from the dead. And Lazarus needed help. I wasn't sure about this guy.
I walked over to one of the cops on duty.
"Where did he come from?" I asked as I pointed at the man in question.
"Willie caught him trying to escape. We convinced him he would be better off inside with the others. I can tell that he wants to get out of here as soon as possible."
So did I.
I went over to the guy and found out his name was Stan Simpson.
"I thought you were dead. How did you pull that act?"
"An actor once told me how to fake death. I didn't know you were a cop. I heard some psycho running around, saying he was going to kill somebody. That was a while earlier, but I didn't want to take any chances, so I played dead and then scrammed."
"So, how did you get out of there?"
"I kicked one of the panels in disgust and found out it moved. It was a separate lower portion on one of the walls of glass. It bent outward, kind of like a doggie door, but this one was made of glass or plastic.
